What is the CDCP?

Launched by the Government of Canada in December 2023, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) helps reduce the financial burden of dental care for eligible Canadians with an adjusted family net income under $90,000. The plan aims to close a significant gap in access to care: before CDCP, 31% of Canadians had no dental insurance, and those with family incomes under $90,000 were twice as likely to be uninsured as higher-income Canadians.
The gap was most pronounced among seniors. Low-income seniors aged 80 and older avoided the dentist at twice the rate of their higher-income peers, 50% compared to 25%, largely due to cost.
Who’s eligible?

Children, adults, and seniors without private dental insurance and with an adjusted family income under $90,000 may qualify for the CDCP. Eligibility is reviewed annually by the government, and members must renew their coverage each year by June 1 to confirm they still meet the requirements. The benefit period runs through June 30.
What dental services are covered by the CDCP?

The CDCP covers a range of dental services, including:
Diagnostic and preventive care: exams, x-rays, cleanings, polishing, and fluoride treatments
Basic services: fillings, root canals, and extractions
Major services: crowns, bridges, orthodontics, periodontal surgery, and dentures (subject to predetermination and approval by Sun Life, with strict eligibility criteria)
Anesthesia and sedation: covered under specific government criteria, also subject to predetermination
