What is Pediatric Dentistry?
Pediatric dentistry provides complete oral health care for infants, children, and teenagers. A child's mouth isn't just a smaller version of an adult's, so early checkups are essential for tracking healthy tooth development and catching problems before they grow. The Canadian Dental Association recommends a child's first dental visit within 6 months of their first tooth erupting.
Children develop two sets of teeth: their primary teeth, which they'll lose, followed by their permanent teeth. Regular checkups help us monitor this transition and catch orthodontic issues, like crowding, early. Early intervention often means a healthier, more stable smile and less costly treatment down the road.

Routine Exams
Routine exams are key to preventing dental disease. Regular checkups let us create a personalized hygiene plan, including cleaning, scaling, and x-rays, while catching problems like decay, periodontal disease, or abscessed teeth early, when they're easiest to treat.
Expected outcome: Early detection means faster treatment, better long-term oral health, and lower costs than letting problems grow in scope or severity.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride treatments are quick and painless, done during your regular hygiene appointment. Fluoride is either painted on as a varnish or applied via gel-filled trays, strengthening tooth enamel to prevent cavities.
Expected outcome: Fluoride treatments reduce cavities and help prevent new ones from forming. They're beneficial at any age, from age 1 through 101.
Sealants
Dental sealants are a thin plastic coating applied to the grooves of molars and premolars. These grooves trap plaque, a film of food and bacteria, that toothbrush bristles can't fully reach, which can lead to decay.
Expected result: Sealants protect against decay, often preventing the need for fillings entirely. The procedure is quick, painless, and requires no injections, and in some cases prevents up to 100% of decay in treated teeth. Sealants wear over time and typically need replacing every couple of years until consistent, proper brushing habits are established.
Early Orthodontic Evaluation
An early orthodontic evaluation is typically done before age 7, allowing the dentist to identify tooth orientation or jaw growth issues early. This early diagnosis makes interceptive orthodontics possible, treatment that can prevent the need for orthodontic work in adulthood or make future treatment simpler, less invasive, and less costly.
