Emergency dentistry addresses sudden dental pain or tooth loss caused by injury or accident. Sudden, severe pain, often throbbing or shooting, is commonly caused by a dental abscess. A blow to the jaw, or teeth closing unexpectedly with force, can also damage the jaw joints, supporting muscles, or ligaments, and may increase the risk of concussion.
What the treatment involves
Persistent or sudden tooth pain is often caused by a dental abscess at the root of the tooth. In these cases, root canal treatment is typically required: the affected nerve and pulp are removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.
Trauma from a blow, accident, or fall that results in a broken or knocked-out tooth should be treated as a dental emergency. If a tooth is knocked out, locate it if possible and bring it with you. Avoid cleaning it; instead, wrap it in moist tissue and see a dentist right away.
A blow to the jaw or an unexpected, forceful bite should also be assessed promptly to rule out damage to the jaw, teeth, and surrounding tissue, as well as the risk of concussion.
