What are Recall Exams?
Recall exams allow your dentist to thoroughly check every surface of your teeth and gums for signs of disease or decay. Using specialized instruments, your dentist checks for cavities and evaluates your gums for signs of active periodontal disease or infection.
What the exam involves
During your exam, your dentist visually examines each tooth and gently probes around the gums to check for pockets or inflammation. A digital scan may be taken to capture areas that aren't easily visible to the eye, and x-rays may be used to detect cavities or abscesses hidden beneath the surface.
What to expect
Most patients benefit from a checkup twice a year, though the right schedule depends on your individual needs. Patients with stable oral health may only need one exam per year, while those at higher risk for dental disease may be seen every three to four months.
Every recall exam also includes an oral cancer screening, a step many patients don't even notice but one that's critical for early detection. We use the VELscope fluorescence visualization system to help identify abnormal tissue that may not be visible to the naked eye, supporting earlier diagnosis and better outcomes.
